Taboo Topics of Conversation in England that you Need to Know!
There are, unfortunately, many taboo subjects in England, which can make opening up a conversation when meeting someone new a little daunting.
Do you find it easy, or do you struggle with what to say?
Perhaps you find yourself clamming up?
Or maybe you operate on the other end of the spectrum, with endless waffling and not quite knowing where you are going with the chitchat.
Knowing what are taboo subjects in England is the first step in helping us relax and feel confident when making small talk, but did you know that asking someone you have just met, “What do you do” is actually poor etiquette?
WHY IS UNDERSTANDING TABOO SUBJECTS IN ENGLAND SO IMPORTANT?
Sadly, the subject of small talk can trigger many different feelings; for some, it is a natural process, and for others, they feel it is a waste of time and that it’s superficial.
Many people don’t understand that they need to start with the small talk to get on to the big talk (the exciting subjects). Otherwise, how else will you know what interests the other person?
It is, if you like, the warm-up to get things going in the conversation arena.
SO, WHY IS ASKING ABOUT SOMEONE'S OCCUPATION A TABOO SUBJECT IN ENGLAND?
- We are being defined. Our occupation should certainly not define us. It should be just one part of our lives, not our total definition or purpose.
- Preconceived ideas. Many of us have preconceived notions about many occupations. Etiquette Coach? Goodness, I don’t necessarily want strangers to know that in the first 30 seconds of meeting me!
- Free Advice. Have you ever had someone ask you for free advice once they know what you ‘do’?
- Salary. By asking someone about their job, you indirectly ask them what they earn.
OTHER SUBJECTS THAT SHOULDN'T BE RAISED
Occupation is not alone; many other questions are being asked that shouldn’t be, such as:
- Where are you from?
- Where do you live?
- Do you have children.
Interestingly, the list of questions you shouldn't ask is far greater than the ones you should!
I cover this topic in depth during my online signature eight-module programme, the Lady's British Social Etiquette and Empowerment Course, during Module One: Poised Introductions.
After my clients have graduated from this programme, they are invited to join my Alumni Society. Here, they can register for advanced online courses and in-person events in London with me to put their skills into practice. One of the most popular advanced online courses I offer is the Confident Conversation Course, where I delve much deeper into the psychology of conversation skills and the emotions that can prevent us from communicating confidently.
